Commitment

This force, which is the best thing in you, your highest self, will never respond to any ordinary half-hearted call, or any milk-and-water endeavor, It can only be reached by your supremest call, your supremest effort. It will respond only to the call that is backed up by the whole of you, not part of you; you must be all there in what you are trying to do. You must bring every particle of your energy, unanswerable resolution, your best efforts, your persistent industry to your task or the best will not come out of you. You must back up your ambition by your whole nature, by unbounded enthusiasm and a determination to win which knows no failure... Only a masterly call, a masterly will, a supreme effort, intense and persistent application, can unlock the door to your inner treasure and release your highest powers.

CWR News

We are proud to announce a new feature that will appear quarterly in The CWR, The CWR Travelogue:  The Journeys of Jonathan Wosu.  Mr. Wosu is a dynamic  professional photographer who travels the world, and he will be sharing information about his travels and his astounding photographic work with our readers.  Watch for The CWR Traveolgue:  The Journeys of Jonathan Wosu in a CWR "Special Edition" later this month.

In this month's CWR there is much empowerment information for students and other readers in and out of the classroom.  We highly recommend:

  • Freshman Survival 101: How to Survive Your Freshman Year in The College Funding BrainTrust from Tanya Knight, written especially to help college freshmen make it through their first year in college.
  • Everyone who struggles with or has struggled with writing essays should read How to Write an Essay in Monica's Writing Skills.  Monica provides very useful tips on how to write effective essays.
  • Managing personal finances is one of the more important skills to master in order to be successful.  In this month's CWR Building Wealth column writer Dwight Harshaw presents a real-life example to demonstrate the disastrous consequences that may result from not learning how to master the art of personal finance in his very touching article, Her Story.
  • For graduates or soon-to-be graduates we offer two very informative articles.  Our Career Zone expert Terry Pile presents Personal Branding and Your Job Search, which discusses how you are your  our own personal  brand, and how the importance of understanding how to develop your own personal brand relates to success in your job search.
  • We provide additional empowerment information for graduates in Sylvia Henderson's Success Language  column with her article, Hire Me. I'm Wonderful!  How do you tell a prospective employer how great you are without sounding "cocky" and differentiate yourself from everyone else doing the same thing?  Sylvia provides the answer.
  • As we often say, image is everything, our CWR Fashion Statements Editor, Natalie Jobity helps readers appreciate that fashion is just one part of the creating a professional image.  Read Natalie's article, Pulling Your Image Package Together to learn all that is involved in creating a professional image that will help you with your career goals.
  • One of the ways to achieve financial independence and build wealth is through entrepreneurship.  That is why we recently added a special CWR edition of the nationally recognized and highly acclaimed column BizBest: Business Made Better written by small business expert Daniel Kehrer, to The CWR.  You would be surprised how many businesses were started by college students while they were still in school.  Mr. Kehrer provides readers with one of the basic tools to help start a business with this month's article, 10 Steps for Writing A Great Business Plan.

There is much more in the April CWR including information about domestic abuse, relationships, a special tribute to Hampton University, several very informative articles in our Connecting Worlds section, our CWR Legal Advisor, and our CWR Virtual Cultural XChange report on The Custom of Chinese Spring Festival from our VCX correspondent in Beijing, Peng Guanlin.

Coming in May:

  • May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and The CWR will include special articles in our tribute to our readers of Asian Pacific American descent.  As a part of our tribute, Connecting World's Inside Asian American columnist Lily Kim provides CWR readers with an overview of the history of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
  • Dr. Jeanne King, Ph.D. continues her outstanding award winning column, "Breaking the Cycle" with her profound article, "When 'We' Means Losing Me - 5 Signs of A Controlling Relationship.

Have a great April.

Hire Me.  I'm Wonderful!

By Sylvia Henderson, MBA

Sylvia Henderson

Sylvia Henderson, MBA

How often have you interviewed for a school, job, or professional opportunity and said, in so many words, "Hire me. I'm wonderful?" When you present your academic and work qualifications and tell your interviewer all the great accomplishments you achieved, you are essentially saying how wonderful you are. While your intent may be to convey the message that you will be an excellent student or hire-or that you deserve the promotion you seek, what the interviewer hears is that you are a legend in your own mind. When I was a hiring manager in a large corporation I encountered many an interviewee telling me how great they were, yet few communicated to me how they could make my company great.  So how do you brag about yourself while conveying your value to an organization?  Go to Sylvia's article now.

Writing a business plan is the first step in turning an idea into a thriving business, starting a new division of an existing company, or simply breathing new life into one that may need a push to get through a tough time. Not only does writing out your idea force you to think more clearly about what you want to do, it gives the people you work with a defined road map as well. An effective plan provides the navigation chart that you'll use to get where you want to go. Here are 10 tips and tactics for business plan success:... Go to BizBest now.

"Let me tell you how defective you are" is a strategy that will yield a disconnection. Whereas, "here is what I need from you" lends itself to connection, communion  and communication in marriage.  In domestic abuse counseling, couples find that the former is a relationship compromiser and the latter is a relationship enhancer. And learning this lesson is transformational to the individuals, as well as to the relationship.  Go to Dr. King's Breaking The Cycle article.

Personal Branding and Your Job Search

By Terry Pile,  MBA

When we see a Walt Disney movie advertised, we think of wholesome family entertainment; a Mercedes Benz represents wealth and luxury; Motel 6 a place for the budget conscious to spend the night.  Each of these brands has created a promise, an experience you can count on.  What kind of image does your personal brand conjure? What will an employer get if he hires you?  A personal brand is the public image we want to create.  It is how we market ourselves to others, particularly in a job search. Creating your brand should not be a last minute effort before an important interview.  Learn how to create your own irresistible personal brand in the April CWR Career Zone.  Go to the article now.

How to Write an Essay

When given instructions to compose an essay, many students panic and ask how long, how many pages and how many words? These questions should not be the guiding force and can hinder the essay writing processing, making it a much more daunting task. Instead, focus on the essay quality, not quantity.  For the most part, everyone can write. However, some do a better job than others, but everyone can be a part of the group that does better, by incorporating the suggestions that are provided in this article....  If your professor has provided instructions, then take note of the requirements and follow them precisely. Pulling Your Image Package Together
By Natalie Jobity, MBA

Last month we talked about the importance of thinking of your image as a package. In a professional context, your image package includes your clothing, your accessories, your level of professionalism, your communication skills, your confidence, your energy-anything that impacts perceptions about your ability to get the job done. Many professionals think of their image mostly in terms of their clothing and accessories, but it truly is every aspect of yourself that others can see, feel, and experience.  Last month's article examined key business accessories for professionals and this month we want to go a little deeper with that topic.  Go to the article now

In March of 2008, a good friend of mine named Chad Dickerson, called me to inform me of a wonderful site that would link me back to my "Home by the Sea". It was called the Pirate Roundup which was like walking across campus and being able to delve back into the past. When he called me, I actually thought by chance that he was kidding, and that this virtual reunion couldn't exist. He patiently assisted me through the registration process, and "voila" I was back on the steps of Ogden Hall, observing the pristine view of Huntington Library, the Holly Tree Inn, the Stone Building, and the infamous circle that led us back to the female side of the campus. Those are memories that I don't believe any amount of time will erase from my mind, I was home.  Go to Tracey's tribute to Hampton University now.

Move-In Ready Specials
By J. Thurman, B.A.

What if you had a move-in ready special on a relationship, would you move in? I don't mean move into the physical space like a house or condo, but move into the ideal relationship. I was having a conversation with a friend who asked me if I had the ideal woman, free from the trappings that deter most men from full participation, DRAMA, would I be ready to move-in, so to speak.  I immediately started inquiring about what conditions this move-in special would include.... Life's most difficult challenge itself is the end, death, and the mourning process thereafter for loved ones - friends and family members.  The recent Snyder v. Phelps Supreme Court decision has a dramatic effect not only on speech, but the way a family can grieve.  Factually, the case began when a soldier, Matthew Snyder, died in the war in Iraq in 2006.  Members of the Westboro Baptist Church protested outside the church where his funeral was held.  The Rev. Fred Phelps led a protest because he attributes the U.S. deaths in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as God's punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.  Go to The CWR Legal Advisor column now, and Finish reading Insult to Injury.

Her Story

By Dwight Harshaw, BBA

Recently, a story came to light in my hometown about a 27 year old woman who was cited for a misdemeanor sex charge. She was caught by an undercover detective in a sting operation targeting escort services. It was her first night on the job.  I am captivated by her story because-before she resigned-she was a high school algebra teacher, with a master's degree, in her fifth year of service.   What happened?  Read this heartrending story only in Dwight's CWR Building Wealth column in the April issue of The CWRGo to Dwight's article now.

Marriage overall in contemporary society no matter the ethnicity appears to be less of a family arrangement. In particular, the percentage of African Americans who are getting married has plummeted compared to previous decades. Some have even speculated that the institution of marriage is becoming obsolete.  Many contributing factors have been given for the decline in marriage in general for African Americans. Korean American Celebrates Hwangap, Her 60th Year
By Lily Kim

On March 15, 2011, Eun Hyung Kim, a Korean immigrant, turned 60 years old. Turning 60 is especially important in the Korean culture and is called Hwangap. It is one of the most sacred and celebrated birthdays in the culture. It is when one has completed the zodiacal cycle. Even more significant is in the past, it was rare to for people to live to be that age.  In Korean culture, as in many other Asian cultures, respecting the elderly is an integral part of society. Hwangap is a time of great celebration where the children honor their parents with much amusement and an extensive meal.  Learn more, go to the article now.

A Short Overview of the New Hispanic Consumer

By Claudia Goffan, MBA

When targeting the multicultural market, race and ethnicity are becoming less important than education, income, home ownership, age and lifestyles.  Hispanics, African-Americans and Asian-Americans are moving to middle-class suburbs and prosperous neighborhoods, and are identified more by their lifestyles and spending habits than by their ancestry.  The composition of the Hispanic population is shifting.  Hispanics now account for 13.7% of the total population.  The "new dynamics" of the Hispanic market hinge on the emerging second and third generations, native- and foreign-born differences, and broad geographic growth.  Go to the article now

The Chinese Spring Festival in February this year has just gone. For Chinese people, it is the most important festival that we celebrate whole-heartedly.  During this festival when people greet each other, they will say "Guo Nian Hao" which means "wish you a good new year". "Nian" means "year" in Chinese language. In the ancient times it also means the beginning of a year. In this month's visual tour, I'll introduce some legend stories about the origin of the Spring Festival.  Go to Peng's article now.
