We are very proud to announce that after a very, very long and arduous search, we have found two extraordinary ladies to revive our Fashion Statements column.  The column will return in November in the very capable hands of our new Fashion Statements team of Ms. Natalie Jobity, CEO and President of Elan Image Management, and Ms. Carina Drakes, also of Elan Image Management.  Look for exciting fashion news in upcoming articles in Fashion Statements.

We are also expanding our Relationships TNT column, and in addition to Dr. Alduan Tartt, who recently appeared on the Fantasia Show on VH1 providing therapy for Fantasia, and Mr. J. Thurman, we are adding Dr. Torri Griffin, who is a psychologist and love and relationship life coach, and Mr. Paul Brunson, who is a certified life coach and is the only African American matchmaker in Americ.  Learn more about Dr. Griffin and Mr. Brunson at the links below:

"I know I should be networking, but it's so hard for me.  I'd much rather put my resume  on the Internet and wait for someone to call."

I hear this sentiment repeatedly from my job-seeking clients, introverts and extroverts alike.   The reality is more than 65 percent of job finders get their jobs through word of mouth (aka networking).  In this economy, the figure may be even higher.  Comparatively, less than 10% get jobs by posting resumes online.  With those odds, job seekers can't afford not to network.  Continue reading.

A Right To A Gun!

The crux of the peace versus violence controversy focuses on gun control versus the right to own a handgun.  In the watershed McDonald v. Chicago 2010 decision, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the right to own a handgun.  The court held the Second Amendment right to bear arms must be regarded as a substantive guarantee.  The Constitution restrains state and local governments from restricting an individual's right to bear arms.  The ruling overturned Chicago's law that banned handgun ownership.  Continue reading.

A student recently told me, "I do not know how to take notes. I cannot take good notes, study or complete assignments without spending a lot of time on them....I never learned how to take good notes. I never learned how to study. I never learned how to determine what is important to write down and what is not. These sentiments are often echoed by many students, who become frustrated, even though they are able to maintain good grades, but not without....Continue reading.

Poverty and Our Nation's Children

The number of people in poverty hit a record high in 2009.  The rise in poverty was steepest for children, with 1 in 5 children affected.  While we recognize that the recession and poverty takes a toll on society overall, it appears to have the most impact on children. Perhaps the most alarming...Continue reading.

Hispanic Heritage Month; The Bicentennial of The Independence of Mexico

September 15 through October 15has been declared Hispanic Heritage month here in the United States.  I've been lucky; in my life I have seen two bicentennial commemorations: the bicentennial of the Independence of the United States in 1976 and now the bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico this year of 2010.  There are many reasons for us to celebrate this historic event. For one...Continue reading.

Why Do You Have to Lead?
By Sylvia Henderson

News flash: leadership seldom "just happens". We exude a leadership presence and demonstrate leadership behaviors, sometimes without being aware of doing so.  If you ARE a leader-whether or not you hold a formal title that says you are-what is it that makes you so? If you WANT TO BE a leader, what must you do to "be one"? My top five ways to earn-and maintain-the privilege of serving effectively in leadership roles are...Continue reading.

This question, once again, tackles one of the twenty-one questions that women do not ask men. A woman's priorities when it comes to need versus want become blurred while trying to get to know someone....I suggest discussing your ideas about love and belonging early in the encounter, so that the person you have an interest in is clear....Continue reading

How often have you jumped to conclusions about what you thought someone was saying?  So often we don't realize that the #1 communication skill is listening... not speaking.  In fact many people live by the credo: He who speaks the most, loses.  Yes, you can talk yourself right out of a blessing.  Whereas, when you listen, you can find ways to...Continue reading.

I will be a freshman at the University of California, Riverside this fall and will be writing about my college experience. Hopefully, you will read each article to experience my first year journey. I attended UCR Summer Bridge. This program prepares students to transition from high school to college. I took an English course that contained a lecture and discussion. I was required to take additional classes (Introduction to University Life and Speech) and participate in student activities.  I also lived on campus for seven weeks, this summer. Overall, I gained...Continue reading
