Donell Edwards, Founder & Publisher

Dear readers,

The College World Reporter (CWR) was created to be a career transitional development and empowerment magazine for college students.  We are and always have been your magazine.  We are very pleased to announce that in coming months students will play a much greater role in The CWR, because at The CWR, it's your world, and that is not a meaningless slogan, it is our way of doing business.  So, in The CWR News this month you will find listed numerous opportunities for students to participate in the production of The CWR.  Now for the news.

World News

Cairo, Egypt - We are very concerned for our Middle Eastern Correspondent Rasha Mohammad and the people of Egypt.  We communicated with Rasha earlier in the week and she was fine.  However, that was before Wednesday's violence and the government imposed disruption of Internet service.  We hope and pray that Rasha is safe and the protests and confrontation will end in Egypt soon.

CWR Connecting Worlds - Inside Asian America

We officially welcome with great joy the newest member to our CWR Connecting Worlds team, Ms. Lily Kim.  Lily will be writing about the Asian American community and is very active and involved in the community and will help readers come to know our Asian American neighbors much better.

NEW!  The CWR Environmentalist

The environment is of great concern to us here at The CWR, and we feel that we all need to be more informed and aware of what is happening to our environment.  After realizing the incredible skills and knowledge of Mr. Yange Ikyaa, we decided to give him his own column, The CWR Environmentalist.  Keep up with what is happening to the environment with Yange.

Student Opportunities - It's Your World!

In our efforts to make The CWR even more of a student-centric magazine we are offering students the following volunteer opportunities to help with the production of The CWR and CWR programs:

  • Student Editor
  • Campus Reporters
  • CWR Writer's Forum for Aspiring Writers
  • Student Of The Month Program
  • CWR Student Advisory Board
  • CWR Student Leadership Roundtable
  • CWR Virtual (VCX) XChange Program
  • CWR Facebook Development

For detailed information about participating in any of these opportunities visit our Facebook page at:

Find us on Facebook

Students, it's your world, we are just a resource for you, so allow us to join you in building your future.

And that's the news!

You Can't Steal My Thunder
By Sporty King, CWR Sage

YOU CAN'T STEAL MY THUNDER...

... you can only share in my blessing.

Are you afraid that someone else will take your place if you share the spotlight?
The truth is, whatever you do provides the contrast I need to express myself as unique... and vice versa.
No one can steal your thunder... they can only share in your blessing

I NEVER LOSE!
And neither should you.
Losing, like winning, is a state of mind.
When we establish a mindset that recognizes the need to compete against ourselves, rather than surrender to others' standards, our victories become more measurable and memorable.
Winning is a state of mind.

THERE'S A DIFFERENCE...
... between losing and being a loser.

Losing can be a part of life, where things don't come out the way you want them to.
Being a loser is a state of mind, where you decide to surrender to the misfortune, even though you have the opportunity to learn from it's setback.
Don't let a loss make you a loser.

In honor of   Black History  Month ,the WED-Women, Empowerment, and Destiny Column is dedicated to African-American Women of the past, present, and future that are excellent examples of trailblazers.  These trailblazers embraced their destiny and literally and figuratively changed the course of history.  In doing so, indelible traces of greatness will forever be on the minds of the nation.  Those are traces that foster, catapult, and define the path for the present and mentor to the emerging leaders that are currently matriculating.  Click Here to continue reading.

One of my proudest moments as an attorney, did not come in the courtroom.  In the spring of 2004, my mother's church choir sang at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, in Atlanta, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. pastored.  There, I met Coretta Scott King and told her that "Learning about her husband inspired me to become an attorney."  She proudly and graciously smiled back with a twinkle in her eye....Although Dr. King as a youth had an interest in law, he did not pursue it as an occupation.  Notwithstanding, he definitely pursued justice...Click Here to continue reading.

As we embark upon Black History Month I think its important to note that the Civil Rights Movement's most beloved son's last message was one that focused a great deal on the subject of economics....In essence, Dr. King saw that the "fight" included a fair economic playing ground if social justice was ever going to be realized.  In many inner cities like Detroit, MI, Gary, IN and others where unemployment is steadily rising, the cry seems to be...Click Here to continue reading.

Who Is That Lady?

By Dwight Harshaw, BBA

This month I would like to tell you about an elder who has taught me money-wisdom. She is not someone who is well known or famous. She has never lived in opulence or earned huge sums of money but because of her frugality, she has always had more than enough to take care of her needs. She has helped others when they were in a tight spot financially, even when they had more assets than she had. Here are some lessons that I have learned from her.  Click Here to continue reading.

Chicago Celebrates Korean American Day at the Daley Center
By Lily Kim

In 2003, Congress declared January 13th Korean American Day, marking the centennial of Korean Immigration to the U.S. The date was chosen because a century prior, a pioneering group of 102 Korean immigrants (56 men, 21 women and 25 children) arrived to Honolulu Hawaii. They came to work on the sugar cane fields of the island and in search of a better life. By the 1920s the U.S. Census counted 27 Koreans in Chicagoland. And now, Korean Americans have become a community of approximately two million people residing throughout the United States.  Click Here to continue reading.

Civility and Public Discourse

By Leona Johnson, Ph.D.

In this day and age, there have been a number of incidents that have caused us to ponder the issue of civility in public life. Civility can simply be defined "as the quality of being polite". Public discourse is a dynamic process that individuals undertake as they discuss public issues in open space. There is a direct link between public discourse and civility....The resolution of our disagreements is crucial to the common good, to the set of conditions, that as a people we work together to provide for one another so that we might all flourish.  Click Here to continue reading.

Characteristics of Hispanic Millennials

By Claudia Goffan, MBA

In terms of population size, Millennials are already reshaping the ethnic makeup of the Unites States....A distinguishing characteristic of multi-ethnic Millennials is their heavily "second generation" orientation (nearly 30 percent are children of immigrants). Since they are more likely children of immigrants than immigrants themselves, the proportion of foreign born Millennials is...Click Here to continue reading.

Communicate Your Ideas With IMPACT©

Sylvia Henderson, MBA

I remember being amazed at how, in my workplace, I would suggest something in a meeting. My suggestion seemed to disappear into the air because no one acknowledged what I said. Then, someone else would make the same suggestion. Suddenly, my manager and other people in the room would exclaim their amazement and become enthusiastic about the suggestion. As they huddled to determine how to implement the suggestion, I would look astounded and think, "Hey, that was my idea!"  Click Here to continue reading.
