CWR News

March is Women's History Month and this special edition of The CWR includes special articles  celebrating the important role of women in our society.  We also encourage readers to have a little fun by seeing how many of the famous women on our cover you recognize.  Just go to our Facebook page to find a worksheet.

We also welcome Mr. Daniel Kehrer and his nationally renowned column, Biz Best: Business Made Better, to The CWR.  Daniel is one of the leading authorities in America on small business growth and development, and there is a plethora of information about every aspect of successfully starting and operating a business, and ideas for entrepreneurs, located at his website at  www.BizBest.com.  Daniel will be writing a special edition of his column for The CWR focusing on how our readers can start their own businesses.

High school students, parents, and high school counselors will find Ms. Tanya Knight's article in The CWR BrainTrust column, "10 Ways to Successfully Prepare You for College," very informative and helpful.

This month's Career Zone is perfect for graduates and soon-to-be graduates as Ms. Tara Goodfellow presents the "Top 11 Ways to Make the Career Services (CS) Work for You."  Readers will find this article to be an effective guide in working with the offices of Career Services on campus to achieve career goals.

For those interested in relationships we offer three outstanding articles: Dr. Jeanne King's Breaking The Cycle article, "Physical Abuse and the Violence Card - The Legacy That Abusers Live," Dr. Torri Griffin's Relationship TNT article, "Fall OUT of Love and Move ON," and Mr. J. Thurman's thought provoking article, "Bullies."

And finally, we present two perspectives on the recent events in Egypt, one from our reporter on the scene in Egypt, Rasha Mohammad, and the other from our Inside Arab America writer Dr. Azadeh Osanloo.  Rasha provides readers with an on the scene account of events leading up to the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and the experiences and range of emotions of the young people directly involved in the protest in The CWR Middle Eastern Report.  Dr. Osanloo explores how Egyptian youths used technology to organize and achieve their goal in her article, "Young People, Know Thy Power."

These are just some of the highlights of the March CWR, see the entire list of articles below in the In This Month's CWR section below.

Happy Women's History Month.

HBCUPrideNation - It's Not Facebook; At Least, Not Yet

By Donell Edwards, BBA

Much has been made of the unbelievable success of the social network site Facebook, and deservedly so.  It is interesting to note that Facebook was started by college students and now has over 600 million users, it is the number one social network service in the world, and can boast that almost half the U.S. population. 41.6%, has a Facebook account.  Not bad for a group of college kids who wanted to provide a service so friends could network in cyber space and exchange information.

It could happen all over again with HBCUPrideNation.... Read more

Dr. Jeanne King

Dr. Jeanne King, Ph.D.

Abusers think that once they offer up an apology that you should get over it. While it's true that with time, domestic abuse victims can heal...the legacy of playing the violence card lives on. Once you introduce violence into an intimate relationship, the dynamics radically change. The imbalanced "power and control" within the relationship intensifies and influences everything, because it's constantly there. Domestic violence counseling can help.  Read more.

Last month we discussed key business accessories that accentuate your professional presence. Fall OUT of Love and Move ON
By Dr. Torri Griffin, Ph.D., LPC
Well, as odd as it may sound, as a love and relationships coach, I hear this phrase in my office all the time, "but I love him" or "but I still love her" with LOVE being the operative word here. What I think this means is, "I love the good times we have even though these bad times keep popping up." So here's what I think is causing the problem.  Read more.

Are you being bullied in your relationships? Usually the person being bullied doesn't even know it. Young People, Know Thy Power

A recap of the events that recently occurred in Egypt spark promise and power in the young people around the world.... When Mubarek, yet another military leader, became president he promised he would only stay for two terms (or eight years), but stayed for three decades. He was a militaristic leader, who held on tight to the power, and did not relinquish it....As time went on, the young of people of Egypt became disenchanted, nay disgusted, with Mubarek's regime because of the lack of education and employment, rigged elections, and ongoing class struggle.... National Black History Month:  Remembering Our Past and Looking to the Future

Since the breaking of the Egyptian revolution, I had been in Tahrir square, the center of protests in Cairo, reporting on the demonstrations. I saw horror: mass killing of protesters, thugs, security forces' harsh crackdowns, snipers, car-on purpose- accidents, kidnap of protesters, and abusing journalists.  At the same time I had seen a unique picture of civility. Protesters who could never be gather in one place in normal life set an example of humanity. Without knowing your name, religion, root, nor profession, protesters had been helping each others as if they are belonging to a one family: Egypt.  Read more
