How to Finish College:  Confronting the Challenges and Overcoming the Obstacles

By Donell Edwards, BBA

There has been much written lately about the high cost of a college degree, and the spiraling rate of student dropouts.  The College World Reporter is conducting our own survey of students and thus far we have discovered that the major problem for most students is related to the lack of funds necessary to stay in school. But there are also other factors which our CWR survey revealed.  Listed among the major concerns of the students in our survey were....Read more.

Series of Articles & Features Commemorating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Who Are Asian Pacific Americans?

Who are Asian Pacific Americans?  What are significant milestones in Asian Pacific American history?  What are common misconceptions others have of Asian Pacific Americans?  Is there a collective Asian Pacific American culture?  We asked a number of Asian Pacific Americans and Asian Pacific American organizations these questions.  One of the people we interviewed for this article was Dr. Franklin Odo, former Director of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Program at the Smithsonian Institute.  Dr. Odo succinctly defined Asian Pacific Americans as....Read more.

The Great Asian Diaspora

Perhaps no people have been more widely dispersed than Asians.  According to Dr. Evelyn Hu-DeHart, Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Brown University, "For centuries before, during and after European colonialism, multitudes of people from China, Japan, the Philippines and India left their homelands for points far and near in search of opportunity or under deception and duress.  Read more.

Fact - OR - Fiction

All Asian Americans are either wealthy and affluent, of members of the American middle class; there are no poor Asian Americans.  All Asians are alike; similar culture, history, and interests.  The coaching book was used by Chinese immigrants arriving through Angel Island in San Francisco Bay.  Find out what is fact and what is fiction, just click here.

Going to college can be an exciting and fun-filled experience. However, locating the right college that would suit your requirements can be a daunting task.  Nothing can be as important as the task of selecting the right college that would suit your requirements and serve your desired purpose.  So how do you choose the right college? We've all heard the saying, "You never get a second chance to make a good first impression." Well guess what? It's true!  People form judgments about us before we even speak.  Judgments are made about our educational level, our achievements, our level of success.... Given this fact, why would you play a game of Russian roulette with your appearance and image?  Read more.

10 Underrated Men and Why You Should Date Them
By Paul Carrick Brunson, MBA
The availability of single men is largely about math. If there are 10 single men at a party and you disqualify 9 of them, your probability of meeting Mr. Right shrinks to below 10% (the reason it's 'below' is because, don't forget, he needs to not disqualify you). When you take this same concept and apply it to our daily lives, the result is that very few women meet and then, subsequently, date men.  The average number of dates my female clients have before working with me is 3-5 per year (and I'm beginning to think this is the rule and not the exception). To increase the number of men you date, there are 2 basic things you can do....Read more.

The Art of Assumption
By J. Thurman, BA
Make no mistake about it there is an art of assumption, especially when it comes to intimate relationships and it is violated in the most egregious manner daily.  The Art of Assumption when it comes to relationships and titles is one of the most controversial topics among men and women. And it is a controversial topic for a lot of people because of the stereotypical gender roles it brings to the forefront and the struggle for clarity in the dark and murky waters of relationships.  Read more.

The rhetorical question for this months WED Column is:  To Be or Not to Be?  The path we take or choose in life is full of unknowns. There are millions of people that we don't know. There are dozens of places that we have never been.  Unmarked, unfettered, and unknown could definitely carve and etch a temporary home into the brains of many women.  We embark upon life situations in pursuit to....Read more.

The Butterfly Effect

By Dwight Harshaw, BBA

The butterfly effect is a figure of speech for a theory that says, "A small change in one place can have a huge effect elsewhere." For instance, a butterfly flapping its wings in South America can start a chain of reactions that result in a tornado in the United States. It's called the Chaos Theory and it works well when we focus on the time value of money. Instead of a place, let's use time. A small change in behavior with your money today will have a great effect on your wealth later.  Read more.

"By the year 2050, our planet may be the home of about 9.1 billion people, and we will need to grow 70% more food. Yet weather, on which food production largely depends, is becoming more extreme and much more unpredictable". These were the words of the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, at a United Nations conference in Rome aimed at stabilizing world food prices.  The UN scribe made these comments while calling for a "single global vision" from world leaders to address the problems of world hunger and pollution.  Any effective and sustainable global vision for agricultural production and global food security must first provide real results for people in real need. And for this to take place, the very factors responsible for the present problems of food shortages and hunger across the globe must be systematically addressed. One of the most significant of these problems is global climate change.  Read more.

Chicago's Mayor Daley Hosts Final APA Reception
By Lily Kim, B.J.

As the days wind down for the internationally known Mayor Richard M. Daley, he spends his last days in office during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. On Tuesday, May 3, 2011, Mayor Daley hosted his last APA Celebration at Chicago's Cultural Center in the Sydney Yates Hall. The reception invited Asians of various industrial backgrounds and recognized outstanding APA Community members.  Gene Lee, Deputy Chief to the Mayor, was one of the awardees. He's a veteran of over 30 years of public service to the citizens of Chicago.  Lee and Director and Community Liaison Kripal (Chris) Zala spoke on behalf of the Mayor. "Asian Pacific Americans are an important part of the fabric of our City.  Working together we've brought Chicago into the 21st century and given it a bright future...."  Read more.

National Minority Health Awareness Month

By Leona Johnson, Ph.D.

April was National Minority Health Awareness Month. In contemporary America, health means everything. It does indeed represent hope for future generations. While there is a great deal of diversity among African Americans relative to health care outcomes, health disparities between African Americans and other racial groups are striking and are apparent in life expectancy, infant mortality, and other measures of health status.... According to the Center for African American Health (2011), African Americans....Read more.

"I have so many ideas churning in my head. How do I begin to sort them out and pick the 'right one' on which to focus my resources?" If you routinely generate multiple ideas, do you find yourself asking a similar question? I know I do. Sometimes my mind is so full of ideas that I have trouble seeing the forest (big picture) because of the trees (small details). This is where critical thinking and decision-making skills come into practice.  A key practice for you to develop and enhance in order to effectively make decisions is to....Read more.

Autistic or Artistic?

By Susan Yang

April 2nd is a UN designated day for autism. An art gallery held an exhibition of paintings by autistic children in Haidian District. Since our teacher, Joanne Cheng is making a documentary on autism in China, Eileen and I were sent to the exhibition to cover the event....It seemed that autistic children were very sincere and honest in dealing with people. They never cover up their real thoughts, neither do they do guesswork about the hidden meaning in other people's behavior. That's why they are considered as lacking social skills. But I think it's just a pure and unguarded attitude, untainted by worldly affairs.  Read more.

First Tour to 798

By Susan Yang

798 is the name of an art and cultural center in Beijing. My first tour to 798 consists mainly of exhibitions of paintings and sculptures. The only instruction I have ever received in appreciating art is "Do not just pay attention to those that please your eyes. Go back to the ones that confuse or even anger you." So here are some pieces of art that have left an impression on my mind.  Read and see more.
