The College World Reporter Announces
Student Success, STAY IN SCHOOL Initiative
Little Rock, AR - September 8, 2011 - The College World Reporter (CWR), the premier student empowerment magazine for college and university students announcestheCWR STUDENT SUCCESS STAY IN SCHOOL INITIATIVE.
The CWR is going directly to students to ascertain the challenges they encounter by asking students to participate in a very brief, confidential survey to learn many of the reasons students are forced to leave school before they graduate. This information will be used to help students, administrators, and faculty members find solutions and resources to help students stay in college.
The survey takes only a few minutes and is strictly confidential. Students may access the survey at: CWR Student Success Survey , or at The CWR website, www.CWRMagOnline.com.
The CWR and its group of expert writers will work directly with students to find solutions to those problems identified through the survey and from other sources and help more students graduate.
The first phase of The CWR Student Success Stay In School Initiative is a series of webcasts featuring some of the foremost authorities on achieving success in college, including Dr. Crystal Kuykendall, and internationally acclaimed educator, attorney, author, and speaker; Dr. Marcia Cantarella, who has served as Assistance Dean at Princeton University and currently serves as Associate Dean at Hunter College, City University of New York, and is also the author of the book, I CAN Finish College: The Overcome Any Obstacle and Get Your Degree Guide; and Tanya Knight, MBA, who has worked in the field of education helping parents and students for over 10 years and is the author of the book, Who Says You Can't Go to College? The webcasts will provide students with the information and resources they need, and the opportunity to get their questions answered from The CWR Student Success Team. Students may enroll at:
CWR Student Success Webcast Enrollment.
Interested students, college and university administrators, parents and others may get additional information from The CWR at TheCWR@CWRMagOnline.com.

Donell Edwards
Publisher & Founder |
In this issue of The College World Reporter (CWR) we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. There are numerous special articles and a special commemorative section that includes a historic timeline and a list of achievements of Latino Americans in 12 areas. We want to acknowledge the contributions of Dr. Filemon Zamora of our Connecting Worlds Inside Latino America team for his assistance with this project. We hope that all of our readers will be better informed as a result of our tribute in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
We are also proud to introduce in this issue our CWR Health & Fitness column. The purpose of this column is to provide CWR readers with information that will be useful in living healthier lives. Although the column will be written by a variety of writers with experience and expertise in the health and fitness world, our first writer, Dr. Janet Brill will be a regular contributor. Dr. Brill is a registered dietitian, licensed dietitian/nutritionist and author of Cholesterol Down: 10 Simple Steps to Lower Your Cholesterol in 4 Weeks-Without Prescription Drugs. She is a nationally recognized nutrition, health and fitness expert, specializing in cardiovascular disease prevention. Dr. Brill's first CWR article is somewhat of a revelation about popular nutritional and dietary supplements. You will enjoy reading Dr. Brill's article, Back to Basics: 6 Superfoods to Keep You Healthy and Happy.
Each year at the beginning of the fall semester it has become a tradition at The CWR to reprint the profound CWR Security Focus article, Back to College Safety & Security Tips, which serves as a primer on personal safety and security that especially helps incoming freshmen who may be living away from home for the first time, and serves as a refresher course for returning students.
We recently instituted our CWR Student Correspondent Program featuring outstanding college and university students, many of whom are journalism or mass communication majors. In this issue you will find contributions by Mr. Anthony Love from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Ms. Ashley Williams from Fllorida A&M University, and Ms. India Hill from Claflin University. These three were selected from a field of very formidable candidates, and successfully complete the admission requirements established by The CWR. We congratulate them and expect great things from them. You will find their initial work in this month's CWR.
This issue is filled with empowerment information from our team of regular writers, and there is something for just about everyone. So enjoy!
We are also proud to officially announce the launch of our new CWR Daily Newspaper, which is your one source to find links to news and information about current national and world events, business, education, sports, politics, arts and entertainment, and much more from major newspapers, magazines, and other news sources from all over the world, including articles from The CWR Empowerment Team. The CWR Daily also includes from time-to-time music videos by popular recording artists. Get your free subscription to The CWR Daily today at SubscribeMeToTheCWRDaily.
We welcome all of our student readers back to your various campuses, we wish for you a very successful and productive year, and we wish for all of our readers a life of empowerment and happiness. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month.

Featured Articles: Why Hispanic Heritage Month Should Be Important to All Americans
By Anthony Love and India Hill
As part of our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month The College World Reporter (CWR) presents our featured articles written by university students participating in The CWR Student Correspondent Program, as they share with all of our readers their views on why Hispanic Heritage Month should be important to all Americans. Here is a sample, "Imagine if America failed to recognize Hispanic and Latin Americans. Worse yet, imagine what America would be like if no Hispanic or Latin Americans called the U.S.A. home. In my opinion Hispanic Heritage Month is parallel to African American History Month, Christopher Columbus Day, and other ethnic holidays." Read more.

Hispanic Heritage Month - The Bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico

Filemon Zamora, Ph.D. |
There are many reasons for us to celebrate this historic event. For one, Mexico is our next door neighbor and we want to be a concerned neighbor and many of us are proudly descendants or immigrants of Mexico. More important for us here in Texas, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, is that all of these states were part of Mexico when Mexico became an independent republic in 1821. Read more.

Hispanic Heritage Tribute
The College World Reporter (CWR) would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Filemon Zamora for his invaluable assistance in the development of our Hispanic Heritage Tribute. There have been so many contributions and achievements by Americans of Latino heritage that it would be impossible to recognize all of those contributions here. We hope that readers will be motivated by our presentation to do their own research and learn more about Latino Americans. In our tribute first we provide a timeline of important events in Hispanic American history. Next, we present some of the accomplishments of Latino Americans in 12 separate categories. Enjoy and learn.

Nutritional shakes, energy bars and specially formulated dietary supplements all drain our pocketbooks, but do they really give us more energy, make us healthier and help us live longer? By Dr. Marcia Cantarella

Dr. Marcia Cantarella |
Studies show that money is a taboo topic. People are not comfortable talking about how much they have or do not have. It is one of the areas we do not ask for help about. Again that "F" word fear gets in the way of getting the advice and help we need. Yet we find that Hispanics and Blacks have 18 to 16 percent less in assets than whites. And we know that a college degree will earn you 54 percent more than just a high school diploma. Read more.

What Should I Do Now?
By Dwight Harshaw, BBA
The stock market is like a roller coaster ride at an amusement park. You get in and secure yourself to avoid a disaster. You enjoy the view during the slow ride up to the apex. And then, suddenly, you're in freefall, speeding to the bottom with the crushing force of the wind in your face, your stomach turns and your body shakes with excitement and fear, as the car turns and jerks on the tracks. When you think you've had enough, it slows down and stops to allow you to get off, or to get back on to be thrilled again. The stock market(s) takes investors on a similar ride; rising and falling on the collective exuberance, fears, expectations, and disappointments of those who invest money into stocks. Read more.
Hispanic Resilience in Today's Economy
By Gil Michel, MBA, CPA
As the Hispanic population grows, their political influence closely follows. But even with a rise of Hispanic community advocates, city officials, state representativesand federal government agents, the recession has heavily affected the hard earned wealth of Hispanic households. According to the Pew Research Center Project's latest discoveries, Hispanic household wealth has been cut by 66% over the four year period of 2005-2009 while Caucasians as a whole have been negatively hit by only 16%. Blacks have suffered a drop of approximately 53% but have not been as adversely affected as the Hispanic community according to the research. Read more.

The crux of the controversy is how to handle the interrogation of a child as compared to an adult.Specifically, whether the age of a child subjected to police questioning is relevant to the custody analysis of Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436 (1966) where the United States Supreme Court held police must inform individuals who are in custody of their right to an attorney before interrogation. Read more.

On July 4, 2011, the largest ever African appeal in response to a massive food crisis was announced by Oxfam, a multinational agro-based company. This appeal was made on behalf of over twelve million people across Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, where an acute drought spell is causing hunger and killing lives. Oxfam's Director of Humanitarian Affairs, Jane Cocking, said it was the worst food crisis of the 21st century, while expressing her organization's concern that large numbers of lives could soon be lost. But reasons exist for this regional food shortage and mounting humanitarian needs. These include... Read more.

A Manifesto of Mentoring and Hope
By Dr. Azadeh Osanloo, Ph.D.
Mentoring or mis-mentoring can be a potent instrument in academia for encouraging or discouraging new students and scholars. It is important that we assertively mentor minorities in education so we can cultivate transformational minority (or ethnic) leaders (hooks, 2003). That is, tapping into the rich resources from our own "brown grounds." Punwar's critical geography is used as the theoretical underpinning for understanding the necessity and complexity of creating spaces for students and scholars of color within education. She asserted... Read more.

Book of the Month
A Reading Empowerment Program of The College World Reporter
Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking
By Malcolm Gladwell
The author describes the main subject of his book as "thin-slicing": our ability to gauge what is really important from a very narrow period of experience. In other words, this is an idea that spontaneous decisions are often as good as-or even better than-carefully planned and considered ones. Gladwell draws on examples from science, advertising, sales, medicine, and popular music to reinforce his ideas. Gladwell also uses many examples of regular people's experiences with "thin-slicing."
